An Alien in ER

If an alien came from another plant and landed in the ER, he would come to an obvious conclusion: a lot of humans have no interest in being healthy. He’d suspect that we are cool with heart disease, cancer and diabetes; that we don’t mind heart burn and indigestion, obesity, achy joints, flabby bellies; that we’re under some kind of self-destructive spell or that we’re suicidal even.

As an ER nurse, aside from people using the ER as their primary care doctor or Pediatricians office for treating minor issues…you’re assisting with vaginal exams, treating STD’s, and sometimes get the random ‘cucumber stuck in the vagina’ patients…you get traumas, gun shot wounds and car accidents but for the most part you’re taking care of patients with chronic PREVENTABLE diseases such as heart attacks, high blood pressure, stokes, diabetes, etc.

Does it make sense that people choose to be sick? I’m sure most people don’t look at it that way, but what you put in your mouth is 100% your decision and it will either keep you healthy or make you sick. You are ultimately in control, don’t use other people and their habits as an excuse for eating badly, it’s your LIFE.

How is it possible that America is the leading nation in healthcare innovation, but yet we’re the sickest? Could it be that we rely on medicine to fix us? I mean, why change your diet and lifestyle when you can just let the doctors take care of you…after all that’s their job, right? 

Actually, it’s NOT their job. Doctors are really smart about sickness, but ultimately, it’s your job to keep yourself WELL! You are responsible for your health! 

Modern medicine is not nearly as effective as most people think….

If every single day an airline plane crashed and killed hundreds of people, would you wanna fly on an airplane? You wouldn’t take your chances, would you?! 

That’s equivalent to the amount of deaths in the US due to medical errors, prescription drug side effects, hospital acquired infections & complications due to surgeries (that may have not even been necessary in the first place).

You’re not gonna believe me when I tell you this….HEALTHCARE is the real 3rd leading cause of death in the US 💀 Preceded by #1 Heart Disease and # 2 Cancer (both preventable in most cases).

Physicians dispense about 4 BILLION 😳 prescriptions drugs every year in the US. And the ENTIRE US population is only 331 million…what the, what!?!

In general, I think people dramatically overestimate how well prescription pills 💊 protect them or think they will “treat” their health problems. Most people choose to totally ignore the FACT that diet and exercise dramatically reduce their chances of chronic disease🍎 because it’s easier to just take a pill. Drugs have become the solution so many people trust and have come to expect but they don’t cure ANYTHING. They muffle symptoms. They mask the problem. Drugs allow people to live without going to all the trouble of changing your habits and fixing what is really wrong. They allow you to be somewhat functional and yet chronically unwell.

So, let me ask you: If an alien were to hangout with you for a few days, what would he think about your nutrition habits? You are capable of your healthiest and happiest life. You can live healthy, you just have to decide that you’re gonna do it. And when you do, your entire life is going to change, because when you show up and take care of yourself, you’re choosing to take care of one of the most awesome GIFTS you’ve been given, YOUR BODY. When you take care of yourself…you feel better…you carry yourself better…and you can show up better to fulfill your purpose in this world. I wholeheartedly believe that-
