Over weight, fatigue, sluggish, insomnia, and lack of motivation. Heartburn, abdominal pain, gas and bloating. Type 2 diabetes, high cholesterol, autoimmune disease, thyroid issues, depression and anxiety.
“This isn’t the life I envisioned for myself, I’m way to young to feel this old”. 36 year old Leslie was frustrated, defeated and confused. She’d meet with several GI doctors, a chiropractor, a hormone specialist and an expensive cash only functional doctor trying to find answers for her aliments.
She’d also tried many diets including Whole 30, Keto and progressively eliminated foods but only got short-term improvement of her symptoms.
Why was she not getting better after seeing so many doctors and specialist?! Because no one was getting to the ROOT cause of her health problems.
Unfortunately, this is seen all to often in healthcare today. There is a specialist for everything and they treat the body as if it has individual compartments.
Heart doctor-cardiologist, Brain doctor-neurologist, Hormone doctor-Endocrinologist. BUT doesn’t it make sense that it all works together?? Instead of “treating symptoms” of health problems, it’s critical that you get to the root cause of the issue or you’ll never get better. You’ll likely be prescribed a medication that will mask or hide your symptoms, but it doesn’t fix the actual problem. And FYI, those symptoms you’re having…that is your body doing it’s job, letting you know that something is not right, something is out of balance.
It wasn’t until Leslie meet with Dr. B (you can go follow him on Instagram HERE), GI specialist and author of the book Fiber Fueled, that she was able to completely eliminate all of her health problems. Following his scientifically validated recommendations, he approached her health holistically and healed her gut by restoring order to her microbiome.
As a nurse who whole heartedly believes in lifestyle wellness, I recently devoured (pun intended 😉 his wealth of knowledge about gut health written in his book, Fiber Fueled. Eating a healthy diet, living a healthy lifestyle and supplementing with high-quality supplements is what I preach and this book just added a whole new layer to it!
Sadly, our current healthcare system does not focus on preventing disease. The significant/fundamental role of nutrition in healthcare is ignored (because there is no money to be made in preventing or curing disease). That’s why as a healthcare professional, I encourage you to be your own advocate. Your health is your responsibility, it’s not the doctors job to keep you healthy.
I transitioned to a plant based diet because it’s undoubtedly the healthiest way to eat. There is no denying that eating food that actually grows in the dirt is healthy. I don’t call myself a vegan or vegetarian, I don’t label it, I simply choose to eat healthy!
If you’ve ever considered transitioning to a more plant based diet or if you’re interested in doing a whole food plant based cleanse, you can check-out the 21-DAY HOLISTIC APPROACH I USED HERE.
