What the heck are superfoods?

Maybe you’ve heard the term, but you’re not exactly sure what makes a food so super— simply explained, SUPERFOODS are foods that a SUPER good for you! They’re nutrient dense foods-power foods, medicinal plants, if you will! These are natures perfect foods to help us thrive. The purpose of superfoods are to provide the high-powered nutrient density that we no longer get from our usual meals. 

A few examples are:

  1. Moringa- this is actually a tree which grows in Senegal, country in West Africa. The leaves of the mornings tree have 7x the amount of Vitamin C in oranges, 4x the calcium and double the protein in milk, and 3x the potassium in banana. They contain powerful antioxidants, too.
  2. Maca– is a plant native to Peru. Maca is a cruciferous vegetable and therefore related to broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage and kale. It is a good source of carbs, is low in fat and contains a fair amount off fiber. It’s also high in essential vitamins and minerals, such as vitamin C, copper and iron. Maca has been found to increase libido in men and women, improve symptoms of menopause, including hot flashes and disrupted sleep at night. Several studies have shown that maca can enhance your mood and it may improve learning and memory.
  3. Gogi Berries– their history as a medicinal plant has roots in ancient China. Many people use goji berries to treat eye, liver, and kidney issues. Goji berries are a good source of vitamins and minerals, including vitamin C, fiber, iron, vitamin A, zinc, antioxidants. Gogi berries also contain all eight essential amino acids. A 1-ounce serving provides nearly 10% of your daily value for protein. For fruit, this is an impressive amount of protein.
  4. Chorella– The one may seem weird to consume. It is a single-celled, green freshwater algae. But, chlorella is very nutritious! It contains protein (most people think of meat a the primary source of protein, I hope your starting to see the trend, plants have protein too!) and it’s also a complete portion source which means it contains all 9 essential amino acids. It have vitamin B-12, iron ,vitamin C, omega-3’s and fiber. Chorella’s tiny green cells also provide a wide range of antioxidants and other vitamins and minerals, plus it can bind to heavy metals, aiding detox and could strengthen your immune system.
  5. Camu camu– this is a reddish-purple cherry-like fruit that grows in the Amazon rainforest. It is one of the highest potent natural fruit sources of vitamin C which is critically important to our ability to defend ourselves from disease. Lots of people rely on a typical store-bought supplement, a pill or a capsule that isolates ascorbic acid. But this is one of the many superfoods that contain incredibly high levels of the vitamin, and in a form that is immediately accessible to our bodies.

As I’m sure you’re aware, these are not in your typical produce section at your local grocery store — it would be cool if they were, but most not. Superfoods are found globally, and the majority are exotic…at least to us. Some in Third World Countries where they use herbs & plants (aka superfoods) to make people healthier.

It’s hard to know which specific products and companies are worthy & don’t really deliver what they promised. There’s no way to tell what you’re getting.
